Second Stop ; Fore Abbey & Distillery
Off-the-Beaten-Path in Westmeath’s scenic countryside, Fore Abbey is a fascinating 7th-century monastic site steeped in history, legend, and rugged beauty. Surrounded by rolling hills, the ruins sit in a picturesque valley perfect for memorable photos.Known as the "Seven Wonders of Fore," this atmospheric ruin offers a peaceful escape with its ancient Benedictine monastery, hermit’s cell, and striking Norman tower. Highlights include “The Seven Wonders of Fore” where local legends speak of mystical phenomena, like the "anchorite in a stone" (a hermit who lived walled into a cell) and the "water that flows uphill." Visit St. Féchín’s Monastery – Founded in 630 AD, which is one of Ireland’s oldest Christian sites.
We then proceed to Fore Abbey Distillery – This small-batch, artisan distillery crafts Irish whiskey, gin, and poitín using traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients. Visitors can enjoy guided tastings of their smooth spirits, including their signature "Seven Wonders Gin"—inspired by Fore’s legendary past.
The Café at Fore Abbey – A charming spot where we stop for lunch that offers homemade treats, from fresh scones and Irish coffee to hearty soups and sandwiches. Perfect for a relaxing break after exploring the abbey ruins.

Final Stop : Trim Castle.
You’ll see the largest, most dramatic and magnificent Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, will be able to admire it from its generous surrounding space and have an interesting one hour tour inside the castle. You’ll learn some fascinating facts about the Norman conquest of Ireland and about the castle’s powerful owners, as well as some other dramatic chapters of Irish history connected with the castle . The town of Trim itself is listed as one of the top tourist attractions in the area as it has the oldest bridge in Ireland and important medieval buildings, as well as charming 18th and 19th century houses. We’ll take time for a short walk next to the town taking time to admire the panoramic castle views, while watching the swans on the river next to the site of St. Mary’s Abbey 12th century ruins where local legend claims the abbey’s tower was used as a prison for rebellious monks !
